Be an AVIDenger

Everyone at Christie is invited to join the team! Kids, Parents and Teachers!

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a program with college readiness in mind. It focuses on closing the achievement gap by teaching students strategies to help them have ownership of their learning and reach their full potential. We use organizational tools and agendas in 4th and 5th grade, but we have instructional strategies site-wide. Writing, inquiry, collaborating, organization and reading to learn are only a few of the AVID strategies we implement.

It's never too young to start thinking about college. A college-bound culture is a culture of success and everyone can benefit from that at any age. AVID is really stressed in 3rd, 4th, and 5th and we're trying to move it into all grade levels in the near future. It'll be available at Carpenter Middle School and in Plano high schools.

Our AVID liaison for Christie Elementary, Mr. Ramos in 5th Grade, has designed an awesome Avengers themed t-shirt to help promote the program.

You pay for your shirt(s) online, and they will ship to Christie 4-7 days after the closing date which is Wednesday, September 30th! Teachers, parents, and students are all encouraged to order and proceeds exceeding a certain order amount will be used towards Christie College Week to promote our college-bound culture. It's a win-win! I hope that you join me in supporting both Christie and the AVID program with Plano ISD.

New School, New Displays!

Look at our Fabulous New Art Display Mr. Steele put up!

On his ingeniously designed display
are a few of first grades art works inspired by the artist Wassliy Kandinsky. These will be our Portfolios this year in 1st grade.

Wassily Kandinsky made art that looked like music sounds! Take a look and a listen to the cool YOUTUBE video on Kandinsky.

We listened to music and were in awe of the prolific variety of art works he created.

Kindergarten and Second are also creating Portfolios this year that you will receive at open house.

We are so excited to have these new displays. Mr. Steele really worked hard to put them up around the building. We can't wait to get some more!

 Thanks Mr. Steele! :)

Sesame Street: Janelle Monae - Power of Yet

A fun little video to remind everyone to never give up...

You just can't do it YET!

First Week Of school!

All week long we will be having the students 1st day of Art!

Art is all about creativity! So I am trying to make procedures as creative, fun, and exciting as I can.

We use the power-point to talk about RESPECT and Never giving up in art! They participate, We practice, Sometimes Mrs. Tice will act a little silly and show them what NOT to do.

Students in the older grades also learn about Expectations  and Procedures
The older students are actively involved in showing me what to do and what NOT to do. We have fun.

It's like making the foundation of a house 1st, we have to establish routine and expectations in order to have a good foundation to build on.

I also emphasizes NEVER giving up and having a growth mindset.

This little video will give you an idea of what we are talking about....

What Can I learn?

Summer is officially here. My room is clean and I am sitting at home in my PJs. But one thing I want to do this summer and challenge you to do, is to be a learner. Every year I look for things to inspire me and try to learn new things. But this year, Thanks to Ryan Steele, I am Ramping it up!

1. I want to get a better handle on Technology in my classroom, so I am taking a class at least once a week during the summer to do that.

2. I love to read books and listen to leaders that inspire me. My favorite so far is...

This is my second time to listen to it, and I really want to make it a part of the way I think. Our kids need to understand that we loose way more than we win and life is full of adversity. What really matters is how we approach our trials, do we see them as opportunities? Are we reflecting, finding ways to improve and grow day by day!

3. Inspired by his wonderful book I am going to try and ask myself everyday "What did I learn from....?" Reflecting on my day...Something, anything, whatever it might be good, bad or indifferent and apply what I learn that day to my life.

I'm thinkin...I'm Thinkin...

I do believe you never get old til you stop learning...

So What did you learn today? Have a great summer and just keep thinking... Just keep learning...Just keep growing...and
